Custom-Built Storm Windows

A collaboration of Sustainable Hanover and the Norwich Energy Committee, the Window Inserts program provides low cost, attractive, custom-built interior storm windows using a proven approach from WindowDressers, a Maine-based non-profit.

Volunteers and customer-participants build inserts to the exact measurements of windows at barn-raising-style community builds. The construction process accommodates participants with a wide range of ability and mobility levels, making it an accessible and fun event.

Accessible and Collaborative

Hanover residents and employees who live within 30 minutes of  Hanover are eligible for these custom-built inserts. The process involves signing up, and, if selected, scheduling a time for trained (and vaccinated) volunteers to measure designated windows for the custom-built inserts.

Participants and other community volunteers will assemble  the inserts at the Community Build September 28 to October 4 at the Norwich Congregational Church.

Priority for participation and subsidies will be given to low-income households that qualify for fuel assistance or use programs at Listen, The Haven, Cover, or the Town Welfare Office.

Why Install Window Inserts?

Saves Energy & Money

New Hampshire has some of the coldest weather and oldest housing stock in the nation. Many residents suffer high heating bills and can barely keep their homes warm. Sustainable Hanover addresses many home efficiency issues but, generally, not windows. The Window Inserts program fills this gap.

Proven Design

These window inserts are well designed, of high quality, and attractive.  They let light in, keep drafts out and reduce heating costs.

Inserts are built of pine frames and wrapped with a durable polyolefin film to create clear views through an insulating air space. Foam weather stripping around the outer edges stops drafts and aids the insert’s tight, custom fit.

Inserts are easy to install, remove and reuse.  They are installed from the inside and held in place by friction. With tabs, they are easy to pull out quickly in an emergency.

Since there are no fasteners to damage the window framing, inserts are an ideal choice for a wide range of residents, including renters. Some landlords will even purchase inserts for their tenants, especially if the landlord pays for the heat.

Affordable

Inserts are custom built to the exact measurements of your windows and are custom priced. On the left are sample prices; your exact price will vary.

Built by volunteers and customer-participants, inserts are more affordable. WindowDressers estimates that participants recoup the cost of their inserts in one to two seasons.

All fees will be waived for low-income households that qualify for fuel assistance or use programs at The Haven, Listen or COVER.
