Energy Overview

In May 2017 Hanover residents showed up at Town Meeting in record numbers to make history. We voted overwhelmingly to transition to 100% renewable energy—electricity by 2030 and heating, cooling and transportation by 2050. In so doing, we became the first municipality in the country to make this commitment by popular vote.

Following this vote, Sustainable Hanover established an energy initiative — its purpose to lead, support, and engage the community in achieving these goals.

April Salas, Hanover’s Director of Sustainability, details efforts to implement these goals in this podcast.

The following tenets guide this initiative:

  • We envision Hanover as a resilient and healthy community powered by affordable and clean renewable energy. How we achieve this vision is as important as the vision itself.

  • We value relationships and are committed to an accessible, inclusive, and equitable process for both getting to and maintaining our vision. 

  • We welcome, in fact depend upon, participation, ideas and leadership from entities throughout the town.

  • We encourage the production and distribution of electricity, heating and cooling of buildings and modes of transportation that are efficient and pollution-free. 

  • We believe that thoughtful development leads to walkable neighborhoods, flexible and adaptable buildings and lifestyles less dependent upon the automobile. 

  • We support clean energy related business opportunities and living-wage jobs that help our families and community thrive. 

  • We inspire and are inspired by others to make transitions that stabilize the climate.
