The mission of Sustainable Hanover is to support βefforts of the community to assure that the Town of Hanover thrives for present and future generations.β Its work is best described by three pillars -- community, energy, and environment -- and guided by clearly articulated values.
Sustainable Hanover is an official Town Committee that requires its members to be residents of Hanover. However, it has several task forces and initiatives, e.g, waste reduction and recycling, energy, sustainable landscaping, communications, for which residency is NOT a requirement.
Sustainable Hanover seeks volunteers who are passionate and curious about sustainability issues. It strives for diversity with respect to age, race, gender, socioeconomic status, interests, and skills.
Sustainable Hanover needs volunteers who collectively have the abilities to:
Think strategically about choosing (and ending) initiatives
Identify and collaborate with local, state, and national environmental organizations
Access and distribute information about items relevant to sustainability under political consideration at local, state, and national levels and promote action on such items (check with Rob if ok)
Find relevant funding opportunities and write grants
Garner political support in the community, both grassroots and grasstop
Lead or support a particular initiative, including researching, designing, and implementing
Network with others (organizations, businesses, restaurateurs, the COOP, retailers, schools, churches, etc.) to learn what they are or might be interested in doing, informing them about what Sustainable Hanover is doing, and looking for ways to be mutually supportive with respect to sustainability issues
Organize events
Develop communication and motivational strategies
Write and/or edit articles (e.g., SH Newsletter, SH website, WHO KNEWS, VN) and other communications
Identify and access communication channels for reaching different audiences
Develop and post on appropriate social media platforms (website, Facebook, X, Instagram, Tic Tok, etc.)
Build and maintain the SH website, including artistic/creative and technical skills
Take succinct and accurate minutes
Organize, archive, and, where appropriate, summarize minutes and other records for historical purposes
