WHO KNEW What a Success Volunteers, Towns and Determination Can Make?

We, at Sustainable Hanover, want to give a big round of applause to Lynn Sheldon and her Waste Reduction Committee for the huge success of the Styrofoam Recycling Event which was held on Sat., June 27th. One couple who had never come to a Styrofoam Recycling Event said they were amazed at how organized it was, how smoothly it went and what a short amount of time it took for them to drop off their Styrofoam. Kudos to all who participated!

It was a very successful collection. One 15 foot and two 26 foot U Haul trucks were packed with Styrofoam. Not only that, but there were many bags of holiday string lights. We greatly appreciate people who refrained from putting string lights and Styrofoam in the trash and were willing to hold on to them until a recycling event. Thank you!

There are so many people to thank for the success of this event. First, thanks to Casella who generously paid for the truck rentals. A special thanks to the four drivers who took the collected Styrofoam to Gilford for it to be recycled!

Thanks, too, to the generous folks who made donations. Over $1300 was donated which helped cover the cost of gas and other expenses.

In addition 30 volunteers from around the Upper Valley donated their time: 18 from Hanover, 3 from Norwich, 3 from Thetford, 2 from Lyme and one each from Hartford, Lebanon, White River Junction, and even one from New Haven, CT, and another from Colorado. Thanks to all who helped in this community-wide effort.

Finally, thanks to all of you who brought your string lights and Styrofoam! What commitment! In 2 hours, 234 cars brought Styrofoam and lights to be recycled. 86 of them were from Hanover, 46 from Norwich, 16 from Etna, 11 from Lyme and 10 from Lebanon. Others came from Thetford, Hartford, Strafford, Enfield, Grantham, Hartland, West Leb, Sharon, Fairlee, Orford, Quechee, Wilder, Woodstock, Barnard, Claremont, Hopkinton, Pomfret and White River Junction. Thanks Upper Valley!

It is amazing what can be done and the fun we can have when we all work together!
