WHO KNEW that Hanover High School Students Wrote the First Climate Action Plan (CAP) for a High School in the USA?

The CAP, expanded to include the entire SAU, was finalized in January 2025 after seven years of work by Jeanne Kornfeld’s Hanover High School’s Earth Systems classes and Environmental Club.

In May 2025, students from Hanover High School and Marion Cross Elementary School presented the focus of their CAP at the Montshire Museum. With public speaking jitters and superb preparation, the students came up in pairs to present different aspects of their projects. Hanover High School’s plan involves measuring greenhouse carbon emissions from its three largest emitters (buildings and the teacher and student school commutes) with reduction goals of 16% by 2030 and 75% by 2050. According to the June 17th, 2025 Sustainable Hanover Newsletter, Marion Cross is focusing on reducing emissions from their food system: “sourcing better and local food, including growing and cooking some of their own; reducing food waste; replacing cardboard with metal, reusable trays; and composting.” (https://sustainablehanovernh.org/newsletter-behind-the-scenes/rvqifyxf26wrebh5axlz9w4m3sfai8
