WHO KNEW Lebanon Landfill Participates in the “Betterbin” Program to Make Recycling Easier?
When you’re shopping, do you ever wonder how you can tell what products’ containers are recyclable? Lebanon Landfill (see lebanonnh.gov/450/Solid-Waste-Recycling) has a system to easily check by installing the “Betterbin” program on your cell phone. Here’s how it works:
Click on the Betterbin icon on your screen. It will take you to the info posted by the Lebanon Recycling Facility which Hanover residents may use in addition to whatever curbside service they have.
At the bottom of the screen you’ll see a row of small icons including a camera labeled “Scan” in the middle. Click on that, and aim the screen at the barcode on the container in question. You’ll get an answer right away.
If the screen says the container is “partially recyclable,” the app will tell you how to do it. For example, if it’s a plastic spray bottle of some cleaning or cosmetic product, it may tell you to remove the cap and the spray mechanism and discard them in your regular trash. Then the bottle can be taken to the landfill.
Also, check the triangular recycling symbols on the bottom of plastic containers. Some recyclers do not take #5 plastic, so it must be thrown in the regular trash. But if you are a Casella customer for curbside recycling, you can include #5 along with any other numbered plastic containers. Check their website for more info: www.casella.com. They have an informative chart showing what is and is not recyclable.
