WHO KNEW There Are many Ways to Keep Your Unwanted Clothes out of the Landfill?
It’s inevitable. Eventually the time comes for you to say goodbye to your favorite pair of jeans. If they’re in good shape and still wearable, you might donate them to someplace like the Listen Center. Or you might put them up for sale at one of the chic local consignment shops. Unfortunately, though, over 80% of Americans’ used clothes end up in landfills.
But there are ways to change that. Check out https://bluejeansgogreen.org for info on a recycling program that turns used denim into insulation that is then used to weatherize lower income housing. Some limitations apply. For example, this program seeks denim that is made of at least 90% cotton. Donated clothing can also be sent to a program called Zappos for Good. Google Zappos for Good for more info.
Meanwhile, you can donate those partly polyester jeans and other used clothing - also shoes, bags, and other accessories - to charitable causes by putting it into a clothing recovery bin. An organization called Apparel Impact has placed bins at the Hanover Co-op, at the Hanover Public Works building, and at 45 Lyme Road, giving you 24/7 access. Other locations are being added around our area. See www.apparelimpact.com for information on the types of products that can be recycled, and watch for news on other locations of Apparel Impact bins to come.
