WHO KNEW that the NH State Forest Nursery Sells Native Trees and Shrubs?

In the early 1900s our forests had disappeared, and sheep had ruined fields. Many states established nurseries to grow seedlings of native trees in an attempt to re-establish forests. NH created its nursery in 1910, and it is still going strong. In fact, due to increased interest in native plants, the nursery plans to extend its beds, update its building, and improve its irrigation system to increase the numbers of plant seedlings grown. These plants are sold at great prices.

You can pre-order each year beginning in December (plants are available for pick-up in the spring), and sales continue until May. This year, unfortunately, many varieties are now listed as ‘out of stock’, because the nursery lost a lot of plants last year due to the extreme drought. The state nursery website explains that, “If an item sells out, there is a chance inventory will be added in the spring as we lift the seedlings from the seed beds. Please check back regularly between mid-April through mid-May if the item you want is sold out. Inventory will be updated on Mondays.”

Assuming availability, the nursery will have bagged packages of bare-root plants that come in bundles of 10, 25 or 100 seedlings.

When April arrives, look for more information about available plants by going to NH State Nursery. There’s still time to order and pick up in May.
