Styrofoam Collection - DATE CHANGE to JAN 27

  • Richmond Middle School 63 Lyme Road Hanover, NH, 03755 United States (map)

Styrofoam Collection rescheduled to Saturday, Jan 27 due to forecast of strong wind and subzero chill factor. Same time and location.

SAVE YOUR STYROFOAM for a Special Sustainable Hanover Collection now rescheduled to be held on Saturday, Jan 27 from 10 am to noon at the Richmond Middle School. This event is co-sponsored with the Norwich and is open to all.

WHY A SPECIAL COLLECTION? Styrofoam is not accepted for curbside recycling or by the Lebanon Recycling Center. Any foam you put into “regular” recycling will end up in landfill or worse case ends up in the environment. We are also accepting old Christmas/holiday string lights which are similarly difficult to recycle locally.

WHAT HAPPENS WITH THIS COLLECTION? Our collection will take the foam to Gilford NH where there is a machine to compress the foam. Then it is sent to a manufacturing facility to become new insulation. String lights will go to a Vermont metal recycler.

WHICH STYROFOAMS CAN WE RECYCLE? We accept only expanded polystyrene, the #6 plastic commonly known as styrofoam. It is often used for coolers and packaging. Read here to understand what foams can and cannot be accepted. All foam must be clean and dry. Please remove tape and stickers.

WHAT ABOUT THE LIGHTS? Please remove any tape, rubber bands or ties on the strings. NO loose bulbs. Light strings do not have to be bagged or boxed.

THERE IS NO FEE TO PARTICIPATE, but donations are welcome to support the costs associated with this event. Donations can be made at the event via cash or check (payable to Sustainable Hanover).

WANT TO HELP? We need a few more volunteers to join our team on collection day. Let us know if you want to keep our landfill and environment styrofoam-free. We’ll have a warming station with hot coffee and snacks! Volunteer by emailing sustainablehanovernh@gmail.com.
