Ray School 4th Graders Take the Lead!

This spring, students in Elizabeth Adams’4th Grade class at the Bernice E. Ray School took on a big question: How can humans use natural resources to meet their energy needs? As part of their research, students explored alternative energy solutions that could help Hanover achieve its “Ready for 100” goals of 100% renewable electricity by 2030 and renewable heating, cooling and transportation by 2050.

Five members of Sustainable Hanover visited in early April to hear student presentations and share updates on Hanover’s progress toward its renewable energy goals. Students were especially interested in learning how the town’s renewable energy efforts have evolved since voters first embraced Ready for 100 in 2017.

After researching different renewable energy options, students wrote persuasive letters advocating for the approaches they believe would best support Hanover’s clean energy future. Their audiences included parents, community members, the Hanover Selectboard, the Ray School, and Sustainable Hanover. Members of Sustainable Hanover responded individually to eight letters from these students advocating for wind, solar, geothermal, hydro and a combination of renewables.

It was inspiring to see Hanover students engage thoughtfully with the future of energy in our community. Their curiosity, creativity, commitment, and enthusiastic support of one another remind us that building a more sustainable future truly takes all of us…and leadership comes from many places.

Our heartfelt thanks to Ms. Adams and her amazing students!
