Hanover Hygiene Heroes
There are many clubs at Hanover High School that focus on helping to save our environment. One of the more notable clubs is the Hanover Hygiene Heroes, who have made it their goal to “relieve Hanover of its pollution, one week at a time.” The club began when students were on a lunch trip to the Co-op. They noticed trash littering the area. After this, club members found more and more pollution on the streets of Hanover. Student Ryan O'Hern, in describing the pollution in Hanover, said “Once you actually begin to look for it instead of waiting for it to become an inconvenience, it doesn't take much searching.”
The club has been very successful since then, able to recruit at least ten volunteer members each week to pick up litter, even in the colder months of the year. While O’Hern describes the cold and snow as the club’s “biggest adversary” another, “problem” preventing the Hygiene Helpers from picking up trash is the decrease of trash in the area, a gratifying feeling for the club.
In working with other HHS clubs such as Youth in Action and the Hanover Environmental Club, the Hanover Hygiene Helpers plan to help pick up trash beyond Hanover in weekend gatherings. O’Hern also says there are potential plans to get the club to Summer Park.
All in all, the club has been incredibly successful, receiving gifts from businesses in town. Hanover High students should note that everyone is welcome to join. The Hanover Hygiene Helpers meet on Mondays at the school, and would be happy to welcome anyone interested. You can find them on Instagram at @hanoverhygieneheroes.
